He became the Steelers’ starting quarterback midway through the 1996 season, after Neil O’Donnell was injured. Stewart led the Steelers to the AFC Championship game that year, where they lost to the eventual Super Bowl champion New England Patriots.
In 1997, Stewart had his best season as a pro, throwing for 3,020 yards and 21 touchdown passes. He was named to the Pro Bowl that year, and was also named the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year.

Stewart played college football at the University of Colorado in Boulder. As a freshman in 1991, he was redshirted. In 1992, as a redshirt freshman, he was the backup to Darian Hagan. In 1993, as a redshirt sophomore, he shared the starting quarterback job with Hagan, before taking over as the starter late in the season. He led the Buffaloes to an 11-1 record and a victory in the 1994 Cotton Bowl over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

As starting quarterback, Stewart led the 2001 Steelers to a 13–3 regular-season record and the top seed in the AFC playoffs. Under the tutelage of new QB coach Tom Clements and new offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey, Stewart had his best year as a pro, throwing for over 3,000 yards, completing 60 percent of his passes, and attaining a passer rating of 81.7.
